The Salina Human Relations Commission heard an update from staff saying two recent employment complaints were closed with no probable cause and will be recorded with exact dates at a future meeting.
Staff reported there are currently no open local housing cases after conciliation or no-probable-cause findings, but said several combined cases the commission waived to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development will be investigated on-site this week. "They're coming this week," the staff member told commissioners, and staff emphasized that HUD operates on a different timetable than the local commission.
On public accommodations, staff said the bulk of recent complaints involved parking-lot accessibility and related striping issues; businesses generally addressed problems after Commission outreach. Staff said one remaining public-accommodations matter involves a national company and that staff will draft a local letter to the company’s point of contact.
The commission did not take formal enforcement action at the meeting; staff characterized the recent pattern as successful resolution through conciliation and outreach. The commission will monitor the HUD investigation results once HUD completes its review.
