Wythe County approves higher water rates and raises new-connection fee to $2,300

The Wythe County Board of Supervisors on July 14 approved increases to the county's water base and volume rates and raised the new-connection fee to $2,300 from $1,500.
County Administrator Stephen D. Bear presented the proposed rate schedule, which increases the base equivalent residential rate from $22.92 to $24.07 and raises the residential volume rate from $11.47 to $12.04 per 1,000 gallons. Meter-equivalent multipliers for larger meters were presented by staff as part of the proposal. The proposed new connection fee was increased to $2,300.
Vice Chair J.W. "Dicky" Morgan moved to approve the proposed water rates and connection fee increase; Supervisor Sarah P. Crockett seconded. After a roll call, the motion passed 4–2 (AYES: Bradley D. Martin; James D. "Jamie" Smith; Sarah P. Crockett; J.W. "Dicky" Morgan. NAYS: Jesse R. Burnett; Stacy A. Terry. ABSENT: Rolland R. Cook). Chair Smith clarified that the Town of Wytheville sets rates for Progress Park and that this county action does not affect Progress Park customers.
The Board held a public hearing as required under state code; no members of the public testified at the hearing on the rates. The county advised that the new charges and connection fee will be implemented as presented and that staff would provide updated billing information and notices to affected accounts.
