Britton-Hecla board approves multiple policy revisions and advances handbook items

The Britton-Hecla School District 45-4 Board of Education on Nov. 12 approved a slate of policy language changes affecting attendance, enrollment, campus rules and student discipline.
On motions made and seconded during the meeting, the board accepted administration and Policy Committee recommendations for multiple items. Landreth and Zuehlke moved and seconded committee-recommended revisions to Policy 5004 (Open Enrollment Revision A), which the board approved unanimously. A separate motion by Landreth, seconded by Hawkinson, approved Revision B of Policy 5004; that motion also carried on a unanimous vote.
The board amended Policy 5001 (Compulsory Attendance) to clarify age, handbook references and what constitutes being considered truant; Schuller moved, Grupe seconded, and the motion passed unanimously. The board approved administration language changes to Policy 5004 in a separate vote.
The board voted 4–1 on Policy 5018 (Parent and Guardian Involvement in Educational Practices) after Hawkinson moved and Landreth seconded; Schuller cast the lone dissenting vote. Policies addressing student illness (5023) and medication (5024) were approved unanimously after motions by Landreth and seconds by Zuehlke.
On campus and driving rules, the board approved revisions to Policy 5032 (Closed Campus) after Zuehlke moved and Landreth seconded; Landreth successfully moved to add “or designee” to both exceptions. Schuller voted no on that particular change but the motion carried. Policy 5033 (Student Driving and Parking) passed following a motion by Landreth and second by Grupe to update permission language and remove a speed-limit clause.
Policy 5035 (Student Discipline) was amended to address administration and out-of-school suspension (OSS) credit; Landreth moved, Hawkinson seconded, and the board approved the changes. Several other policies were moved between first- and second-reading status as the board reorganized the agenda at the start of the meeting.
The board’s actions were procedural amendments to existing policies; no new programs or immediate operational changes beyond updated language were adopted at the meeting. The board is scheduled to reconvene on Dec. 9 in the BH Board Room.
