Commissioners heard a series of parks and recreation updates, including an MDOT approval for a proposed disc golf course and progress on restrooms and facility bids. The commission was told groundwork for prefabricated restrooms at IG Levy South is under way and the units are scheduled for delivery in late May.
Staff reported that regularly scheduled programs — aerobics, after-school offerings, pickleball and line dancing — are performing well. Bid packages for a Sportsplex score booth and the Pascagoula Recreation Center gym floor are in progress, and the Andrew Johnson Pool startup is underway. Upcoming special events include the Jackson County Heart Walk, the Bollinger employee picnic, a disc golf tournament and the Jackson County Sand Jam. Several tournaments were listed, and adult softball competitive and social league registration closes May 15.
Commissioner Joseph Powell said Pascagoula Baseball will submit a bid to host the 2028 8U World Series. Powell also reported that since installing HUDL cameras at the Sportsplex the location has seen "more than 21,000 views," a figure he used to highlight online engagement; that number was reported during the meeting and not independently verified in the record. Gulf Coast United reported 60 children attended tryouts for the competitive league; the organization described the partnership as intended to create a feeder program for Pascagoula Soccer.
Jonathan Green said he would look into what would be required to start a girls flag football program after a commissioner noted growing local interest. The meeting concluded with congratulations for local teams and no additional formal actions recorded.
