Manager Mike Gossett told the board the contractor offered two options: install new flooring over the existing surface (which would void flooring material and workmanship warranties) or remove the existing flooring and abate the asbestos as outlined in the change order. Staff recommended the second option, citing contractor concerns about moisture in the slab and the risk of visible movement within three to five years if the existing floor remained under the new material.
The board approved the change order by voice vote. Gossett reported the original contract was $60,752 and that the new total after the change order would be $64,970. Staff listed abatement and proper disposal of asbestos-containing materials as the reason for the increase.
The board directed staff to proceed with the abatement per the approved change order and to coordinate the work schedule with the contractor.
