Britton-Hecla School Board holds special retreat, enters executive session on personnel

Troy Knecht, president of the Britton-Hecla School District 45-4 Board of Education, called the special board retreat to order at 9:08 a.m. Monday at the Marshall County Healthcare Center.

The board approved a procedural motion by Board member Landreth, seconded by Board member Erickson, to move two additional items — a Sora update and a School Resource Deputy update — from board and executive session to occur earlier in the agenda. The motion was recorded as carried in the minutes.

President Knecht announced an executive session at 9:23 a.m. to discuss personnel matters under SDCL 1-25-2(1). During that closed session, Board member Schuller exited at 9:35 a.m. and left the meeting. The executive session concluded at 10:08 a.m.

After the executive session the board discussed a range of operational topics, including current and projected student enrollments, the district budget and capital outlay needs, staffing and schedules, curriculum and technology, transportation arrangements, building and grounds maintenance, food-service operations, the school calendar, and activities and athletics. The minutes also note updates related to Sunset and Westwood Colonies and legislative developments at the state level; no specific policy votes on those items are recorded in the minutes.

Board member Grupe excused herself from the meeting at 1:02 p.m. to attend a gymnastics meet. The retreat concluded with a motion by Erickson, seconded by Landreth, to adjourn; the meeting was recorded as adjourned at 2:40 p.m. Madisyn Neiber is listed in the minutes as Business Manager and Superintendent Benson is recorded as present for the meeting.
