Houston County honors local Korean War veterans and presents congressional tributes

The record named Billy Ellington, Charles Brown Potter, Bales Harton Robbins, Harold Duane Smith and Joe (Joel) Thomas Sr., and described each veteran’s branch, service dates and community contributions as entered into the congressional record.
District office staff and representatives from members of Congress and the U.S. Senate provided flags flown over the U.S. Capitol, letters and challenge coins; those items were distributed to honorees and family members during the meeting. Officials noted additional congressional and senatorial letters were in the mail or being delivered to recipients.
The commission read and presented proclamations in the meeting for individual veterans, acknowledged family members, and invited photographs and a reception with cake prepared by local family members. Commissioners also passed a motion to make veteran recognition an annual practice—honoring two veterans each year, beginning on Veterans Day week. The commission recorded the motion and approved it by voice vote.
