Preston council approves routine business, hires officer and declines to narrow 2nd North

The Preston City Council on Jan. 27 approved routine consent items, confirmed a police hire, reappointed a planning commissioner and accepted staffrecommendation not to narrow the 2nd North roadway.
The council approved the minutes of Jan. 13, 2025 after a motion by Councilmember Terry Larson and second by Councilmember Chris Larsen; the minutes motion passed with Councilmembers Todd Thomas, Terry Larson and Chris Larsen voting aye and Councilmember Brent Dodge abstaining. A subsequent motion to approve bills through Jan. 27, 2025 passed unanimously.
Chief Dan McCammon told the council he had extended a conditional offer to Michael Rasmussen and asked for final approval; the council approved hiring Rasmussen unanimously on a motion by Councilmember Terry Larson and second by Councilmember Brent Dodge. Chief McCammon also gifted Cuyler Stoker his Glock duty pistol in recognition of Stokers service; Mayor Dan Keller thanked Stoker and wished him well as sheriff of Franklin County.
Chief McCammon administered the police oath to three officers introduced with family present: Tyrel Winder (sworn in as officer), Nicholas Hyde (sworn in as sergeant) and Scott Royer (sworn in as lieutenant).
Councilmember Brent Dodge moved and Councilmember Chris Larsen seconded reappointment of Adrienne Alvey to the Preston City Planning and Zoning Commission for a six-year term beginning Feb. 11, 2025; the motion was approved unanimously.
Director of City Planning and Land Use Shawn Oliverson and Public Works Director John Balls inspected a site related to 2nd North, located survey markers and concluded the road center sits on the far north side of the pavement; Oliverson recommended no change to the roadway width and the council voted unanimously to accept that recommendation.
Stevie Emerson, president of the Preston Area Chamber of Commerce, gave a brief report on the Chambers progress and goals. Mayor Dan Keller adjourned the meeting at 5:50 p.m.
