Resident raises nuisance complaint about 102 West Oneida; police report no violation, mayor to meet with complainant

A Preston resident urged the city to act on what she described as a nuisance at 102 West Oneida during the Aug. 26 council meeting.
Joann Crockett told the council she believes the property is in violation of the city’s nuisance code concerning accumulation of junk and said permitting the condition could encourage others to allow properties to become messy.
City Attorney Lyle Fuller and Police Chief Dan McCammon reported that Officer Loveday investigated the property in May. Chief McCammon said the officer did not see materials that met the ordinance’s definition of abandoned, discarded or unused junk because the items appeared to be used for ongoing projects; no citation was issued following that inspection.
After discussion the council voted unanimously to have Mayor Dan Keller meet with Ms. Crockett to discuss the matter further and to determine whether additional action is warranted. The council did not direct staff to issue citations based on the reported investigation.
What to watch next: The council requested a follow-up meeting between the mayor and the complainant; any further enforcement or council action would be reported to the public if taken.
