Preston council delays awarding design RFP for proposed recreation/community center to explore county option

Preston City Council voted Dec. 9 to delay awarding a design contract for a proposed recreation and community center on the hospital property so the city can explore a parallel proposal from Franklin County.
Councilmember Todd Thomas and Community Development Specialist Shawn Oliverson reported that two design firms interviewed for the project provided professional proposals but estimated design fees between $90,000 and $150,000 — considerably higher than the city had budgeted. Franklin County officials have proposed building a community center at the fairgrounds and invited Preston to participate; in light of that, the council moved to hold off on awarding the RFP and to investigate the county option. The motion passed unanimously.
Council members said they want to avoid duplicating facilities and to review potential cost-sharing or different siting before committing city funds.
