Post Falls superintendent warns district faces nursing shortfall as staff decline

Superintendent Dena Naccarato told the Post Falls School District board on June 9 that student attendance edged up in May but the district faces a staffing concern in nursing. She reported May attendance of 92.78%, up from 92.59% the prior year, and an average of 21.7 substitute teachers per day compared with 21.4 in May 2024.
On staffing, Naccarato said the district currently has three school nurses and that two of those may not sign contracts to return next year. "We can't compete with the compensation offered by hospitals," she said, noting that many schools rely on health-room aides at elementary sites but that a single nurse will not be sufficient for district needs. The district intends to post nursing positions this summer to recruit replacements.
Naccarato's comments were delivered as part of her superintendent’s report; the board did not take a formal vote on the staffing update at this meeting. The district’s staffing plans and any associated budget implications will return to the board for further action as required by district hiring and budget processes.
