Fibercom proposes citywide fiber to Rigby at no cost to city

Representatives from Fibercom asked the Rigby City Council for permission to bring high-speed fiber internet to the city at no cost to the municipal government.
Paul Sorensen, identified as Fibercom's community liaison, said Fibercom would cover the full cost of installation and ongoing maintenance, supply a sample agreement and informational materials, and allow residents to sign up individually. Sorensen said the proposal would not create a monopoly; Fibercom said it would remain open to other providers operating in the area.
Tyler Smith, Fibercom's Director of Outside Plant, described construction methods intended to limit disruption, including trenching in open areas, stitch-boring under homes and landscaping and directional boring beneath roadways. Smith said Fibercom would be responsible for repairing any damage to city roads and planned to complete the project in a focused single-phase effort rather than spreading work over an extended period.
Council did not take a recorded vote on the proposal during the meeting; the presentation provided the council with preliminary materials and opened the item for future consideration.
