Board honors summer student workers and previews August school kickoff events

Trustees and administrators recognized student summer workers for campus maintenance and introduced upcoming events: supply/schedule pickup Aug. 5–6, Sneak Peek on Aug. 11, staff return Aug. 17–18 and first day of school Aug. 19; teacher Luis Garcia highlighted employability skills gained by participants.
The board recognized a team of summer student workers July 22 for their work preparing the campus for the new school year.
Luis Garcia, a business teacher who coordinates the summer worker program, described students’ duties — waxing floors, detailing buses, deep‑cleaning classrooms — and praised the students for learning employability skills such as teamwork, communication and professionalism. "My name is Luis Garcia. I'm one of the business teachers here at Fenton High School," S7 said before thanking students for their work and noting that for some it was their first job.
Several students came forward to receive certificates and shared short plans for after graduation. "My name is Demaris Lopez. And after high school, I wanna go to college, then dental school," S9 told the board. Other students said they planned to pursue college, military service or careers in education and the arts; multiple students credited school mentors and programs for shaping their goals.
Administrators also used the recognition segment to preview fall events: supply-and-schedule pickup on Wednesday, Aug. 5 and Thursday, Aug. 6 (8 a.m.–4 p.m.), Sneak Peek night for incoming freshmen on Aug. 11, staff return on Aug. 17–18 and the first day of school on Wednesday, Aug. 19. The district said it will continue traditions such as link-crew freshman orientation, staff-and-student stories for empathy-building, and a professional-development focus on AI and instructional priorities.
Board members thanked students and staff and asked for a group photo to close the recognition portion of the meeting.
