Fluvanna County economic authority reorganizes leadership; staff reports Wawa site progress and business outreach

The Economic Development Authority of Fluvanna County elected new officers and heard staff updates on local business outreach at its reorganization meeting July 13.
Jeffrey Potter was elected chair after a recorded vote during the reorganization portion of the meeting; Potter abstained from the vote. Charlotte Gregory nominated Potter, and Reese Peck seconded the nomination. The board also elected Joshua Bower as vice chair, Raghvendra Singh as treasurer and Valerie Palamountain as secretary; each nomination passed with six votes in favor and one abstention by the nominee.
County staff member Jennifer Schmack delivered the authority's periodic report for February and March. Schmack said staff completed 25 visits to existing businesses, participated in 18 partner-agency or networking events, logged 17 other engagements, handled two real-estate/prospect inquiries and two commercial-kitchen inquiries, made one small-business referral and recorded no commercial-kitchen rentals or ribbon cuttings in that period.
Schmack reported that site work is progressing across the full 32-acre parcel for the planned Wawa and that all permits for the project have been issued. She also noted ribbon cuttings planned for The Artful Lodger and Sweet Art Emporium and said the VA250 Mobile Museum will appear at the Fluvanna County Fair in August.
Schmack gave several outreach dates: Small Business Development Center (SBDC) hours will be held at the FCPL on July 20 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and a business-education session is scheduled Aug. 6 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Ashlawn Clubhouse. Potter welcomed new board member Erica Rice, who the record notes has a background in developing business systems.
Under new business, Reese Peck asked that the county website include a direct link to pages listing sites ready for development; Schmack said she would request that a button be added to the Fluvanna County site directing users to the Yes, Fluvanna website.
The board approved the consent agenda unanimously and adjourned at 5:31 p.m.; the next reorganization meeting is scheduled for Sept. 14, 2026.
