Roberts council adopts impact-fee ordinance to fund capital and fire-district improvements

The Roberts City Council adopted an ordinance establishing development impact fees for capital improvements, including upgrades to the Roberts Fire District, during its Aug. 13 meeting. Mayor Robert (BJ) Berlin read the ordinance summary aloud and said the measure would affect new residential and commercial construction within city limits.
Casey Burns, a resident who said the Roberts Fire District recently responded to a house fire at his home and to a traffic crash involving his daughter, said he "fully supports the ordinance." No speakers opposed the ordinance during the hearing, which Mayor Berlin closed at 7:03 p.m.
Council later corrected the ordinance number from 2024-0813 to 2024-568 due to a clerical error. Shauna Lounsbury joined by phone for part of the meeting; Benjamin Poston recused himself from the discussion and vote because of a conflict of interest. Council President Edidt Sanchez moved to pass Ordinance 2024-568; James Zillinger seconded. The clerk recorded a roll-call vote with Poston recused and the remaining members voting aye. The motion passed.
Why it matters: Impact fees create a local funding stream for capital projects tied to new development, shifting some infrastructure costs to new builders rather than existing taxpayers. City officials said funds will be used for capital improvements citywide, including fire-district system improvements.
