Post Falls district reviews levy plan and student-support pilots; board hires assistant superintendent

Superintendent Dena Naccarato told the Post Falls School District No. 273 board on Jan. 13 that December student attendance improved 1.46% compared with December 2023 and that staff absences averaged about 19 substitute teachers per day versus 21 last year.
Naccarato said she expects a long legislative session affecting education funding and that she has begun a levy presentation tour ahead of a supplemental levy on the May ballot. She told trustees the district will prepare two budgets because a levy is planned in May and that the budget must be published by May 31. A budget priorities review is scheduled for the district’s annual budget meeting in April.
Naccarato announced a four-day school week survey for parents, staff and students in grades 9–11 will open Monday, Jan. 27 and close Feb. 6; she said results will be shared at the Feb. board meeting. She also reported that all employees received a $1,250 stipend in November and that a roughly $1,000 stipend is planned for March; she indicated the March amount may be “a little bit more.”
District staff presented two student-support items: staff from Ponderosa Elementary described Project Stand Up for Kids, a mentoring and check-in program with 71 participating students and reported positive early results; Assistant Superintendent Anna Wilson reported December Istation results are above the state level. Assistant Superintendent Trina Caudle said the district is piloting high-school counseling services with Up North Counseling; student participation requires parent consent and the district may expand the provider to middle schools if the pilot is successful. Caudle also said high-school graduation-rate figures remain pending state appeals and she expects to report final numbers at the February meeting.
On a personnel action, Superintendent Naccarato recommended and the board unanimously approved hiring Janelle Baillie as Assistant Superintendent of Secondary Programs.
The board heard these informational updates and approved consent and personnel items without dissent; the meeting adjourned at 6:15 p.m.
