The Le Sueur-Henderson School District board on July 20 approved a series of routine administrative and policy items, including the appointment of an interim elementary principal, a renewal contract for environmental health and safety services and the district's long-term facilities maintenance plan.
The board voted to authorize "Mister Curran" to act as the district's identified official with system authority, a formal step staff said will enable administrative changes in district systems. Director Winsloff moved the resolution and Director Luna seconded; a roll call in the meeting transcript recorded six directors saying "Aye." The resolution was adopted.
The board approved the appointment of Katie as interim elementary principal. The superintendent's office provided a memorandum of agreement allowing Katie to return to her previous position if the district does not need an elementary principal next year. Director Schwartz moved the hire and the motion carried by voice vote as recorded in the meeting transcript.
Staff presented a renewal with IEA to continue environmental health and safety consulting for services including asbestos, lead and water testing and certification. An IEA presenter summarized the contract as usage-based and "not to exceed" a stated ceiling; staff said prior-year invoice levels were roughly $17,000–$18,000 and that the renewal reflects modest year-to-year increases. The board voted to approve the renewal.
Facilities staff reviewed the district's long-term facilities maintenance (LTFM) plan, calling it a "working document" and noting the board's statutory requirement to approve it. A staff speaker said the district receives approximately $380 per pupil in state aid for this purpose — "about $360,000 a year" — and that recurring facility services consume roughly $75,000–$80,000 annually. The plan lists prioritized repairs and larger projects such as roof work and auditorium upgrades; staff said the list will guide future budgeting and that more discussion will continue in upcoming meetings. The board approved the LTFM plan.
The board reviewed and adopted updated student handbooks. Changes to the elementary handbook highlighted new attendance procedures for unexcused absences and added language about wearable devices: wearables were discussed as included in the district's cell-phone policy. Staff said communications to families will accompany the changes to avoid surprises. The middle/high handbook was also adopted; the board noted that lunch pricing remains to be finalized and will be updated before the school year.
Votes at a glance (as recorded in the meeting transcript): the meeting records multiple motions approved by voice or roll-call votes, including the agenda, consent agenda, Curran authorization, appointment of the interim elementary principal, the IEA services renewal, the LTFM plan and both student handbooks. Where the transcript lists specific tallies or roll-call responses those are reflected in the meeting record; some vote tallies in the transcript are inconsistent and are summarized as "approved" below.
The meeting adjourned following approval of the final motions.
Notes: All direct quotes and vote notations are taken from the meeting transcript. The transcript contains minor inconsistencies in vote tallies and spellings of some board members' names; those are noted in the audit and have been reported conservatively in this article.
