Pratt Pilot Club seeks grant for ADA surfacing at 6th Street Park; city offers informal support
Summary
The Pratt Pilot Club asked the commission for permission to pursue a Heartland grant to replace wood chips with ADA-compliant turf at 6th Street Park, quoted between $88,500 and $146,000; the club requested city assistance removing old surfacing and maintenance, and commissioners gave informal consensus to proceed and asked staff to follow up.

Members of the Pratt Pilot Club outlined plans for phase two of 6th Street Park and requested municipal assistance to secure and implement a grant-funded upgrade.
"Our purpose for being here tonight is first to ask permission to proceed with this project," Laurie Ferguson, a member of the Pratt Pilot Club, told the commission. The club seeks to replace existing wood-chip surfacing with ADA-compliant ground cover so individuals with limited mobility can access playground equipment. Ferguson said the club has three contractor quotes ranging from about $88,500 to $146,000 and is pursuing a grant from the Heartland Foundation expected to cover roughly half the project cost.
Ferguson asked the city to help remove the existing wood chips and plastic border — work the club estimated would reduce their out-of-pocket cost by roughly $11,000 — and to accept responsibility for future turf maintenance. Commissioners expressed general support; one commissioner asked staff whether a formal approval was required or whether a consensus would suffice. The commission signaled informal approval and asked staff to coordinate the city’s participation so the club can proceed with grant applications and additional fundraising.
City staff said the Pilot Club should submit a formal request if material commitments are required; the commission and parks staff agreed to assist with removal and to consider routine maintenance if funding and schedule are clarified.
The club said it will continue to raise funds through donations, events and other grants and will return with final contractor selection and a start date once funding is secured.
