Council agrees to submit state permits for Walnut Creek Housing annexation; county economic development outlines LOIS intern project

At the June 8 meeting, City Administrator Cole Herder reported conversations with Joe Works about annexation of the Walnut Creek Housing Development and asked the council to approve submitting state permit applications for public water and sewer extension. Herder said the development is about 100 acres with 35 lots available and four currently occupied. Councilmember Francis moved to accept the request to submit the applications; Councilmember Crawford seconded and the motion carried unanimously.
Camille Lavon, vice president of Allen County Economic Development, briefed the council on the agency’s recent activity. “The economic development took advantage of a grant from Kansas Commerce to hire an intern as a micro‑internship meaning the intern would be hired and utilized for one specific project, in this case, it will be uploading commercial sites in Allen County to the LOIS database,” Lavon said. She added the organization expects to obtain 501(c)(3) status in the third quarter and is working with individuals interested in filling a vacant pharmacy position in the county.
No formal annexation ordinance or final permitting decision was made at the meeting; the council authorized staff to submit the state applications. The items will return for any required follow‑up when state permitting responses and annexation materials are available.
