Hoyt council approves up to $6,500 for police car repairs, discusses staffing

Chief of Police Dan Wentling provided the monthly police report at the Aug. 6 meeting, updating the council on staffing and vehicle status.
Wentling said the department is recruiting for an additional officer to cover day hours and reported the black patrol car is currently in the shop. He provided a worst-case repair estimate of $6,200 from Briggs if both lifters and the camshaft need replacement and noted the Kansas Highway Patrol has a long waiting list for agency vehicle purchases. Debbie Dreasher moved to authorize the chief to spend up to $6,500 on repairs; Joe Romans seconded and the motion carried.
Council discussion also included pursuing placement on the Kansas Highway Patrol waiting list to obtain a replacement vehicle, an option Romans said he would pursue. The decision to allow up to $6,500 in repair spending gives the department capacity to address the current vehicle while staff continue recruitment and explore procurement avenues.
The council recorded no additional immediate funding commitments for other police equipment at the meeting.
