"I just think it makes a lot of sense to, to reduce the speed, for safety reasons," he said, adding that he had discussed the idea with residents and local businesses that supported the change.
Several members expressed concern about enforcement, the potential for creating inconsistent sectional speeds, and whether the change could spur broader requests for reductions on other corridors. The mayor asked the police chief to compile crash and speed data so the board could review supporting evidence and emphasized that the posted limit will not be enforceable until signs are installed.
After debate and a roll-call-style exchange, the motion to reduce the speed in the named Ward 3 section passed. The mayor said he would post notification on the city’s Facebook page once signage is in place and urged staff to provide the police data requested.
The board’s action changes the legal speed limit in the specified portion of Railroad Street; implementation depends on sign placement and public notification.
