Selectboard to explore short-term rental ordinance and seek legal review

Rob Viglas told the Selectboard that after a Planning and Zoning Commission meeting there is "a strong desire among residents" to address the growing prevalence of short-term rentals and adjacent rental structures, especially multiple units on single properties. The board agreed to consider a short-term rental (STR) ordinance to regulate temporary and short-term rental dwellings.
Selectboard members said the town should seek legal review before drafting enforceable language. The board agreed Merrill Bent should be engaged to evaluate the legality of any proposed ordinance. Linda Schmidt offered to research model ordinances from nearby or similarly sized towns for the board to use as examples. Rob Viglas said he would begin drafting the ordinance so it could appear on the agenda at the next meeting.
