Selectboard told Town Hall lacks potable water as emergency-plan deadline approaches

Bill Mitchell told the Sandgate Selectboard on May 18 that the Local Emergency Management Plan (LEMP) "needs to be signed before June," and reminded members the LEMP must be updated annually to list contacts and available equipment. Mitchell added that, because Town Hall currently lacks potable water, it is "generally unprepared" to be used as an immediate emergency shelter.
Selectboard member Joe Nolan said the board is working to resolve the potable water issue. The state Department of Health test kit for the town’s water system has arrived; Nolan said water will be tested "at a point before it reaches the pipes of the building." He also said reserve funds are available to replace necessary elements of the water system if repairs are required.
The board also discussed hot-water needs at the Town Garage. A quote from John Bushee was presented to replace the existing boiler; the proposed replacement would not convert the system to propane, which may affect eligibility under certain grant specifications. Board members discussed alternatives, including a boiler replacement, on-demand electric units for sinks and a separate pressure washer with hot-water capability. Nolan said he will contact Tom Yandow and share Don Latif’s contact information to obtain additional quotes.
The board assigned follow-ups: Linda Schmidt will confirm equipment-change details with Jay (the town clerk), and staff will proceed with the scheduled water testing and evaluate findings before deciding on capital work. The board noted the LEMP-signing deadline in June as the immediate procedural next step.
