On July 1, the Wellesley Select Board voted 5-0 to approve using $4,725 from the Campana Fund to hire eight summer interns for the Council on Aging to work nine weeks at $15 per hour, Executive Director Meghan Jop said.
The allocation responds to an ongoing summer staffing need and is meant to support intergenerational programming, Jop said. The Council on Aging had previously partnered with the town’s Green Shirts program and the Youth Commission for similar roles; this year the COA requested a direct Campana Fund allocation to staff activities and transportation when volunteer availability is reduced.
Select Board members asked about the interns’ duties before the vote. Select Board member Colette Aufranc said the interns would assist with transportation to shopping trips, coordinate activities and provide volunteer support, particularly when the volunteer pool is lighter during the summer months. Jop confirmed the proposed use of Campana Fund money is within the fund’s intended purpose.
The motion to approve the Campana Fund allocation was made by Select Board member Colette Aufranc and seconded by Select Board member Thomas Ulfelder. The Board polled and approved the request 5-0 (Aufranc, Freiman, Largess, Sullivan Woods, Ulfelder voting aye).
The memo requesting the funds was submitted by Judy Gertler, chair of the Council on Aging Board; the request lists eight interns at $15 per hour for nine weeks for a total of $4,725. The Board did not specify additional program oversight details during the meeting; staff indicated the program would begin the following week.
The Select Board adjourned its meeting at 9:44 a.m.
