Commission weighs ‘Talking Trails’ plan, signs summer speaker contract and tracks local repairs

Commission member Shirley Swanson updated members on her research into establishing a 'Talking Trails' information system for Pierre and Ft. Pierre. Shawn Brannon, who works on business development for Talking Trails, joined the meeting by phone for an extensive discussion of development, implementation and maintenance issues. The Commission reached consensus that more discussion and review of options is required before deciding to pursue a dedicated effort.
Robert Kean reported that Brad Tennant has agreed to present two talks this summer as part of the Short Grass Arts Council's Tales on the River program at the Moose Lodge in Ft. Pierre: June 18, 2026, "Fame Over Misfortune – La Verendrye and the Opening of the Western Fur Trade," and July 16, 2026, "Homesteading and Settling the Great Plains." A contract for Tennant’s presentations has been signed and publicity will be handled by the Short Grass Arts Council.
Kean also updated members on efforts to identify best practices for refurbishing the Waldron Memorial on Ft. Pierre and said he is seeking recommendations on maintenance for metal monuments and statuary. Separately, Kean reported he has solicited bids from two businesses to replace the recently damaged Andy’s Meat Market sign in Ft. Pierre and will report back when bids are received.
