Board allows removal of public shade tree at 9 Gallium Drive with replacement requirement

The Dartmouth Board of Public Works opened and closed a public hearing July 22 and approved a homeowner's request to remove a public shade tree at 9 Gallium Drive to accommodate a planned home addition and a wider driveway. Superintendent Tim presented the site plan and recommended approval on the condition the owner plant and establish a replacement tree at an appropriate frontage location; the superintendent suggested a 2–2.5 inch caliper replacement and said the property owner would be responsible for the initial establishment.

The applicant, Mister Garcia, asked whether the replacement had to be the same species; the superintendent recommended a similar species and said staff would coordinate on species selection in line with subdivision and public shade tree guidance. Tim noted a Dig Safe call would be required before any installation to locate utilities. Mister Gagne moved to approve the removal and require a replacement agreed by the superintendent, the Chair seconded and the motion passed with recorded yes votes by Mister Gagne and the Chair.

The board and staff discussed public education about designated scenic roads and shade tree protections, and members suggested working with the tree warden, tree committee and planning director to provide neighborhood guidance about permitted removals and replacement responsibilities.
