Brooks said his family's property has been in the same family for generations and that recent nearby sales led to a large increase in his assessment. He described filing an appeal with the assessor's office, then the board of equalization and then seeking review by a grand jury; he said the grand jury “refused to hear the case.” Brooks told commissioners he contacted his county commissioner and a state representative but said he had not received satisfactory remedies and that, as of his remarks, he believed “there is no legal, legitimate way to appeal property taxes in Pickens County.”
Chair Thor Hodge thanked Brooks for speaking and noted the board had other commenters on the agenda timing. The board did not take immediate action during the meeting; Brooks' remarks were entered into the public record.
