Placerville CSD reports staffing losses, strong pool attendance and high swim-lesson utilization

Nishihara said the department has shrunk by four full-time positions in the last two years and continues to operate with limited staff. He highlighted recent downtown beautification work, drought-tolerant landscaping in tree wells and new seasonal banners.
On aquatics, Nishihara said swim-lesson weekly capacity is about 220 with utilization near 84%, and that the pool had approximately 2,100 visitors this summer. He also said the pool passed its slide inspection and noted the Aquatics Center will close for the season on Labor Day (Sept. 7). He warned of long-term maintenance needs—citing a potential replaster cost of about $250,000 in five to 10 years—and said staff is prioritizing what the city can sustain in the general fund.
Nishihara described operational changes taken this summer to protect safety and staff, including adjusting the age rules for unaccompanied minors at public swim and restricting participation when behavior poses liability concerns.
The commission asked for more photos in future updates so members and the public can better see projects and accomplishments. Nishihara also requested residents report maintenance and vandalism via 311 to help staff respond faster.
What happens next: staff will continue monitoring aquatics metrics, pursue community feedback through the survey to set priorities and return updates at future meetings.
