Ithaca council reviews downtown signage, Horvat Dental site plan, MMR contract renewal and facility updates

City Manager Jamey Conn updated the City of Ithaca City Council on several administrative and planning matters on June 16, including a Planning Commission—s approval for a new Horvat Dental office at 207 Dilts Road and multiple downtown operational items.
Conn told council that the Planning Commission approved the dental office site plan and that a local commercial business had requested permission to place a permanent advertising sign on a downtown sidewalk. Conn said the current ordinance prohibits permanent sidewalk advertising because such signs impede pedestrians and complicate snow removal; he offered alternatives including advertising on the corner sign, a new digital billboard, or using building-mounted flag holders with owner permission.
Conn also reported a request to repaint a faded handicap pavement symbol in a south downtown alley and to install a permanent sign for the parking space; council agreed to proceed. On building and facility matters, Conn introduced a proposed five-year renewal for MMR—s use of the rescue station and said he has discussed cleaning issues and rental terms with Brett Hansen of MMR. Council expressed openness to renewing the agreement pending an acceptable rental cost and cleanup plan; Conn will follow up with Mr. Hansen and bring terms back to council.
In announcements, Councilperson Clark Hubbard thanked the DPW crew for post-storm cleanup. Conn said the DPW will observe the Fourth of July holiday on July 3 and City Hall offices will be closed July 6. He said FEMA representatives will be in the area for about four weeks due to a county-declared state of emergency and that Perrinton offered its community center as a venue beginning June 29. Conn also said he received a text from County Commissioner George Bailey indicating the county commission voted to approve purchase of the Gratiot County Animal Shelter from the city. Councilperson James Andrew requested a resolution of recognition for Luke Klifman.
