Eudora leaders discuss shared administrative support for Chamber and CVB, explore guest transient tax

EUDORA, Kan. — Mayor Tim Bruce convened a June 22 special meeting for a joint work session with the Eudora Convention and Visitors' Bureau and the Eudora Chamber of Commerce to review their memorandums of understanding and identify ways to increase events and foot traffic in town.
City Manager Zack Daniel reviewed the current MOUs the city maintains with both the CVB and the Chamber and said the City recognizes both organizations need additional administrative support to progress toward their goals. Kelly Long, president of the Eudora Chamber of Commerce, and Amy De La Rosa, president of the Eudora Convention and Visitors' Bureau, told commissioners volunteers "report burnout as the main reason that they discontinue their volunteerism," which limits each group's capacity to stage larger or more frequent events.
Commissioners, Chamber and CVB leaders outlined several possible responses. They expressed interest in creating a public communal resource or directory to help residents and visitors find information about local events, restaurants and programs. Participants also described a potential stable administrative staff position shared among the organizations; that person would focus on paperwork, marketing and other office tasks, be largely self-driven and have low supervision to reduce turnover.
The group discussed using incentives to encourage businesses to participate in a Chamber/CVB business registry. Participants asked staff to "determine incentives each organization can give to businesses for their participation in the Chamber/CVB/potential business registry" and to "look into establishing a guest transient tax" to provide a revenue source for promotion and visitor services. The transcript records these topics as proposals for further exploration; no ordinance, tax rate or incentive package was proposed or adopted during the meeting.
Mayor Bruce closed the work session at 6:59 p.m. No action was taken on the work-session proposals. The meeting adjourned on a motion by Commissioner Roberta Lehmann, a second by Commissioner Jason Musick and a recorded vote of 5-0 in favor.
