City outlines Greenspace rental policy for non-profits and flags fireworks statute changes

City staff presented recommended procedures for use of the new Greenspace and existing City Hall by taxing jurisdictions, Edgerton non-profits and other groups; the council approved staff recommendations.
Staff proposed that taxing jurisdictions/mill-levy agencies use the conference room without deposit and community room at no charge for public meetings; Edgerton non-profits would be required to have an initial Council approval for free use of conference or community rooms for business meetings; other non-profits may use the conference room during business hours at no charge if available. Reservation requests that include public attendance, alcohol, after-hours use or gym use must be approved by the Council through the Special Event Application. Council approved staff's recommendations 3–0.
In the administrator report, City Administrator Beth Linn said Senate Bill 199, recently approved by the Kansas Legislature, expands fireworks sale dates and allows year-round retail sales at permanent fireworks stores. City Attorney Todd Luckman advised the council that while the city could impose stricter local rules, the state law changes have a 60-day effective period and staff will review whether local ordinance amendments are needed for 2025.
