City staff briefed the Transportation Commission on two recent community initiatives: Bikefest 2026 and the May 9 grand opening of phase 1 of the Dry Creek Greenway East Trail.
Suzanne Ingleke, alternative transportation planner, told the commission the Dry Creek Greenway East Trail is roughly 2 miles long and includes a trailhead with parking and restrooms, benches, exercise stations and wayfinding signs. The trail provides safe connections to neighborhoods and business districts, passing under Interstate 80 and Sunrise Avenue, and was presented as a step toward a regional trail connection with neighboring communities.
Rebecca Espenschade, safe routes to school coordinator and Bikefest co‑chair, summarized Bikefest 2026 (held May 2 at Vernon Street Town Square): the city has hosted 33 Bikefest events historically and staff said the program has distributed more than 5,300 helmets and 115 bicycles overall. This year’s event hosted about 390 participants and staff distributed 190 new helmets and provided safety instruction, helmet fittings and a raffle of donated bicycles.
Commissioners praised the events and the new trail, noting heavy attendance at the opening and some parking congestion at the trailhead during the festivities. Staff said the events rely on donations and community volunteers and highlighted the city’s continuing focus on bicycle safety and trail connections.
The staff report was informational and required no action by the commission.
