Hancock County committee approves appointment, resolutions and bills; sets reimbursement policy for excessive food claims

The Hancock County Building, Grounds, Safety, and Insurance Committee on July 14, 2026 approved a series of administrative actions including an appointment, several resolutions, and bill payments, and clarified its approach to expense claims.
Steve Finney moved to appoint Jason Jacquot as the county’s noxious weed superintendent; Michelle Merritt seconded and all members present voted aye. The committee also approved a resolution related to taxing deed 23-14-000-538 (moved by Finney, seconded by Jacquot), adopted the county’s 2027 holiday schedule (moved by Merritt, seconded by Rodgers), and approved a solid waste plan intended to return the county to compliance (moved by Finney, seconded by Jacquot). Each of those motions passed with all members present voting in favor.
On claims, the committee reviewed expense items. A lunch claim by Mr. Schweizer totaled $29.94; Finney moved to reimburse only the GSA limit of $18 and Rodgers seconded; the committee approved reimbursing $18. Members also scrutinized Kohl’s invoices, saying some purchases exceeded what the county considers a balanced meal; Tom Rodgers moved that the committee write a letter to the sheriff’s office informing them that another excessive food bill will not be paid, a motion seconded by Jason Jacquot and approved by the committee.
Ms. Merritt moved to pay the county’s bills with an amendment to Mr. Schweizer’s claim; Mr. Finney seconded and a roll-call vote recorded all members present voting yes. During the meeting Mr. Turner informed the committee he will be resigning, saying he does not have the time to commit to the board. The committee recessed and adjourned at 8:02 p.m.
The committee also heard a brief report from visitor Ryan Ramsey noting the county had only two workers' compensation claims year-to-date, which he attributed in part to training efforts.
