Edgerton council adopts ordinance clarifying residential no-parking citations

The Edgerton City Council on Jan. 9 unanimously approved Ordinance No. 2176 to clarify which Standard Traffic Ordinance citations apply to the city's existing no-parking and limited-time parking areas.
Assistant to the City Administrator Kara Banks told the council staff discovered confusion in Municipal Court about whether parking restrictions should be cited under the STO or the City ordinance. Banks said the measure simply cites the specific STO number for each restriction and "staff is not recommending any additional parking restrictions or changing current parking restrictions." The ordinance does not change where parking is prohibited; it clarifies how violations should be cited.
Councilmember Ron Conus moved to approve Ordinance No. 2176; Councilmember Clay Longanecker seconded the motion. The ordinance carried on a 4-0 vote with Councilmembers Longanecker, Deb Lebakken, Bill Malloy and Ron Conus voting yes.
The council's action responds to an operational issue identified through Municipal Court processing and is intended to reduce officer and court confusion when enforcing posted restrictions. No new parking zones or restrictions were proposed as part of the ordinance.
The ordinance will be codified in Chapter XIV, Section 14-205 of the Municipal Code as described in staff materials.
