The Oak Hill City Commission approved a residential-only trash and recycling contract with Waste Pro on Dec. 8 after staff presented the results of a second RFP. The residential option — presented in the packet as a unit cost of about $38.29 per month — was approved after public comment and debate about impacts on small local businesses.
Business owners told the commission the residential-only approach would push commercial accounts to separate commercial haulers, likely increasing costs for small businesses and possibly increasing large-truck traffic on neighborhood roads. Neil Bonds (295 Indian Creek Road) and other business owners urged the commission to consider the economic strain on commercial operations and to pursue more competitive bidding timelines for future contracts.
Staff said Waste Pro responded to the city’s request for a residential-only quote and that the city currently had a temporary contract through Dec. 31; commissioners noted the bid opening had been recent and that the commission could revisit contract details if implementation showed unintended harms. The motion to accept the residential bid passed by roll call.
