Hancock County highway committee hears OSHA report, unanimously OKs temporary hire to replace township signs

At its June 29 meeting in Carthage, the Hancock County Highway, Road and Bridge Committee reviewed an OSHA inspection finding, approved hiring temporary help to replace township rural reference signs, approved claims, and recessed until July 30. No monetary penalties resulted from the inspection.
The Hancock County Highway, Road and Bridge Committee met June 29 in the county courthouse in Carthage and unanimously approved allowing a county engineer to consult a retired department employee and hire a temporary worker to finish replacing rural township reference signs.
The action followed an engineer's report from Elgin Berry about a June 9, 2026, Occupational Safety and Health Administration inspection. Berry said the inspection will generate a written citation to be sent to committee member Mark Menn, with Berry receiving a copy by e-mail; no monetary penalties will be assessed. He reported that a written hazard-communication program and first-aid training were completed on June 26, and that a written lockout/tagout program is required with training mostly completed by the same date.
The report prompted budget-year questions about how information-technology needs and county cell phones will be handled. Mr. Menn said he will consult the county IT office and report back in July. Committee members also noted that a new budget line item will be added for an Aid to Townships program; no funding amount was specified at the meeting.
During discussion of rural reference signs, Berry said county roads'side signs have been replaced but the township signs remain undone because of staffing constraints. Wayne Bollin moved to allow Berry to speak with a retired department employee and to hire a temporary second person to complete the township signs; Tom Rodgers seconded. A roll call vote of members present was unanimous in favor.
The committee then reviewed and approved claims on a motion from Bollin, seconded by Rodgers, again by unanimous roll call. Rodgers moved that the committee recess until July 30 at 8:30 a.m.; Jason Jacquot seconded and the motion passed. Chair Dennis Castlebury adjourned the meeting at 9:10 a.m.
