Madison aldermen approve broad consent agenda including personnel changes and project pay applications

MADISON, Miss. — The Mayor and Board of Aldermen of the City of Madison unanimously approved a comprehensive consent agenda at their regular meeting on June 2, 2026, covering personnel changes, contracts and project pay applications.
Mayor Mary Hawkins Butler called the meeting to order at 6:00 p.m. and, after asking whether any consent items should be removed, accepted the board’s unanimous motion to approve the consent agenda. Alderman Janie Jarvis moved approval; Alderman Guy Bowering seconded.
The consent package included acceptance of the minutes from the May 19 meeting and approval of the claims docket, as well as several personnel actions: the board accepted Investigator Vicki Currie’s retirement effective June 25, 2026; authorized hires for parks and public safety positions (including Thomas D. Luby, Dustin G. Keith, Daniel L. Sims Jr. and Joshua A. Wooten); approved a departmental transfer for Carlos Jackson to the Water Department; rescinded an offer to William Morrell; and accepted the oaths of Police Officers Devin Kency and Deshawn Bush.
The board also authorized payment of engineering and planning invoices and estimates, including Pickering Firm, Inc. work for Madison Avenue widening Phases I and II and an engineering estimate for the Rice Road Overlay Project. Officials approved Pay Application #4 for Layne Christensen Company on the City Center Water, Sewer & Drainage Project and accepted final Pay Application #9 for Hemphill Construction Company on the same project.
Other consent items authorized the mayor to sign a Mississippi Department of Transportation permit for the Highway 463 turn lane project, acknowledged bids and authorized applications for federal assistance for Bruce Campbell Field runway rehabilitation and related ramp modifications, and approved a six‑month extension of a Verizon tower lease to allow for negotiation of a new lease.
The board also acknowledged an order in Geneva Gardens Home Owners' Association v. Betty C. Weatherly and the City of Madison and authorized demolition of the property in accordance with that order, and directed staff to award Montgomery House irrigation and lighting work to the best and lowest quote upon review.
The motion to approve the consent agenda passed unanimously. Mayor Butler declared the motion carried.
