Citrus County fire district board sets millage at 0 in preliminary budget hearing

The Citrus County Fire Protection Special District Board voted unanimously in July 2026 to set the districts fire protection millage at 0 during a preliminary budget hearing.
Interim Management and Budget Director Barbara Luckum told the board that the special taxing district includes the city of Inverness and that "right now, we're recommending continuing to not levy any millage for this." Chair Diana Fenigan opened the meeting for public comment; no members of the public spoke.
Following Luckums statement, 2nd Vice Chair Jeff Kennard moved to set the millage at 0.0000. 1st Vice Chair Jana Barrick seconded the motion. The board voted on the motion and the chair announced the motion carried, 5-0.
The action on the millage was procedural and limited to the fire protection special district; the board did not take votes on the county general fund during this session. The chair adjourned the special-district portion of the preliminary budget hearing and said the board would reconvene at 9:00 a.m. for the general fund and the remainder of the budget work.
