Consultant: Jupiter Island beach ‘stabilized’ and an offshore survey shows years of sand available

Clay Bryant, a consulting engineer with Gahagan and Bryant, told the Beach Protection District on June 22 that the island’s shoreline is in unusually good condition and that recent surveys identified offshore sand resources that could sustain future nourishment projects. “We’re doing very well on sea‑turtle nesting numbers,” a district staffer said during the presentation, and Bryant described broad, linear beach profiles and wide berms that are protecting North Beach Road and many homes.
Bryant said he inspected the beach the previous Thursday and presented current photographs showing 80–150‑foot berms and healthy dune systems in most places. He reported a continuous sandbar offshore and “linearity” in the shoreline that, in his view, indicates the beach is equilibrating after past variability. He noted a small number of revetments remain in front of a few homes but said most of the oceanfront relies on dune protection rather than hardened structures.
The consultant flagged early‑stage Australian pines sprouting in several dune locations, explained they shade and kill dune vegetation and are prone to falling during storms, and advised early removal and treatment to avoid costlier future removals. He also reviewed specific property conditions, saying some stretches are currently wider than the district’s standard fill template and would not require immediate nourishment.
Bryant described two offshore borrow/bar sites, the research vessel Bold C used for the work and the geophysical instruments deployed — sub‑bottom profiler, magnetometer, multibeam sounder and side‑scan sonar. He said the team covered about 160 line miles over a roughly 25‑day campaign and will process the data in the coming month. The sub‑bottom profiler helps determine sand layering and depth of material; the magnetometer flags ferrous items; multibeam and side‑scan provide full‑bottom coverage and imagery. A marine archaeologist supervises cultural resource assessment steps Bryant said are required before dredging.
On supply, Bryant said the sites currently provide about a 25‑year supply of quality sand for the town’s needs and that an expansion area identified in 2019 could extend that supply substantially if permitting and further analysis support development. He told the board the next phase will include vibra‑cores (state guidance suggests one core per 1,000 feet to confirm sand continuity), planned for August, and that the team hopes to submit a permit application in November.
Chair and board members thanked Bryant for the report. The consultant emphasized that, while the current condition is favorable, the island remains vulnerable to major hurricane surge events where trucked sand or larger projects may be required to rebuild dunes and berms.
What’s next: the district will review Bryant’s forthcoming geophysical report and vibra‑core results this summer and consider a permit application later in the year that could expand the town’s borrow areas and extend the projected sand supply.
