Larry Newton, Anson County's tax administrator, told commissioners the office faces extra workload because of software changes and state statutory shifts (he cited SB 889 and SB 474) that delayed parts of the 2026 revaluation process and extended appeal windows. Newton said the office's part‑time funding was cut during recent budget adjustments and that part‑time help is needed to process tax bills and handle increased appeal work.
Newton asked for $30,000 total in temporary funds ($10,000 each for assessing, collections and DMV), explaining that modest part‑time funding will help the office get property tax bills out to resume predictable revenue flows. After clarifying that $10,000 survived in assessing in the approved budget, commissioners moved and approved $20,000 to cover two additional departments (collections and DMV) on a voice vote.
Commissioners discussed timing and the effect on bill mailing and collection; Newton cautioned that delays in mailing could affect revenues and cash flow. The motion passed and staff were directed to coordinate with finance to finalize the allocation.
