Heritage Commission advances centennial plans, schedules Chautauqua and public‑art exhibit

Members described plans for a two‑day program with speakers, artists, music and possible poetry readings, and asked for volunteers to help coordinate programming and logistics. Event Coordinator Drew Bell recommended regular planning meetings to organize the program and manage souvenirs and outreach.
Chair Christine Arnold described a public‑art idea tied to local history: she recounted finding a 1930s council letter about a local whooping crane nicknamed "Andy," wrote a short children's story about the bird for goodie bags, and proposed using Andy as a mascot for a fiberglass whooping‑crane public‑art trail decorated by local artists. Commissioners discussed using the public‑art exhibit to attract visitors during the centennial events.
The Commission also discussed a planned fourth‑grade field trip that will invite McRae Elementary and Keystone Heights Elementary to participate. The agenda listed a March 6 date for the item, while the discussion text referenced Thursday, April 24, 2025 as the planned trip date; commissioners emphasized that station times should be kept to about 10 minutes so students can rotate through activities.
The Commission scheduled an artifacts inventory and supplies check for Feb. 20, 2025 at 9:30 AM and asked members and volunteers to assist with the physical inventory of memorabilia.
The Commission will continue meeting on the third Tuesday of each month at 6:00 p.m. and encouraged residents to volunteer for event coordination and artifact preservation efforts.
