Commission defers Jupiter Island Club zoning amendment and schedules public workshop after residents raise concerns

"The objective is modest and practical: to preserve the existing historic character of the club campus by bringing the code into alignment with the reality of long-standing legacy buildings," Bowerman told the commission.
Several commissioners and residents pressed for more detail and broader community engagement. Commissioner Marshall and others said the petition read as a large, omnibus change that could affect neighbors and asked the club to break the proposal into smaller, clearly defined elements. Resident and Development Review Board chair Judy Heldon raised questions about how "legacy" would be defined and about setbacks and pond rules; other residents urged a wider workshop so all island residents have an opportunity to comment.

The commission agreed to schedule at least one public workshop in the fall so staff, the club and the public can refine language and provide additional public outreach before any legislative vote. Commissioners asked the club to provide narrower, componentized requests and to work with town staff on clarified language about setbacks, ponds, nonconformities and what precisely would be treated as a legacy improvement.
Ending: The commission deferred action on the text amendment, set a path for a public workshop, and asked staff to collect written suggestions from commissioners and residents to forward to the club.
