City of Layton leaders used the March 5 council meeting to remind residents about the March 7 City Celebration and related weekend events, and to offer practical safety and maintenance advice ahead of the holiday gatherings.
Vice Mayor Greg Lewis said attendance at the City Celebration has been strong and highlighted the canoe and newly added kayak races, the Keys Marine Laboratory open house and the awards and barbecue dinner planned for Saturday. Councilwoman Megan Jones thanked participants in the second annual Pickleball Tournament (16 contestants) and Councilman Jared Rodriguez said the canoe race has been altered to include kayaks this year and that residents who need a canoe should contact him for help. Councilwoman Cindy Lewis invited residents to the KML open house, scheduled 1–3 p.m.
Mayor Bruce Halle addressed frequent power surges and outages that he said are being caused by birds and reported he has spoken with the power company, which is investigating. He suggested residents consider surge protectors for their electric service boxes, noting an approximate retail price of $95, and reminded owners of older homes to inspect water supply connections, which may be plastic rather than stainless steel and could cause expensive leaks.
The council did not take formal action on event planning or on the utility matters during the March 5 meeting; the reports were presented as mayoral and council updates.
