Lazy Lake council defers decision on proposed T‑Mobile fiber cabinet on NE 24th Street

At its Feb. 5 meeting, the Village of Lazy Lake council heard a presentation from Byers Engineering, on behalf of T‑Mobile, proposing installation of a fiber distribution cabinet within the public right‑of‑way along NE 24th Street near Andrews Avenue.

The proposal described a concrete pad‑mounted cabinet to serve as a local distribution hub for fiber internet, underground conduits installed by directional boring, a handhole vault for connections and an electrical connection for the equipment. The presenter said the cabinet would be small and would support high‑speed fiber distribution.

Council members said the packet lacked engineering drawings, elevation renderings and visual representations showing how the cabinet would look and affect pedestrian areas. Council raised safety and pedestrian concerns for 24th Street, possible visual impacts for adjacent properties and whether local residents would directly benefit from the install. The T‑Mobile representative said the cabinet would not emit radiation or noise and that the equipment footprint would be limited.

Because those supporting documents were not provided, Councilmember Jeff Grenell moved to defer the item until the applicant supplies engineering drawings, elevation renderings and a visual representation of the cabinet; Councilmember Arnold Aliff seconded. The motion passed 4‑0.

The council did not approve any permit or authorize construction; staff will expect the applicant to return with the requested technical drawings and visual materials before the council takes further action.
