Lazy Lake council appoints mayor and fills two council vacancies

The Village of Lazy Lake council appointed Ray Nyhuis to the office of mayor and filled two council vacancies at its Oct. 24, 2024 meeting.

The appointments followed recent resignations: Council Member Mark DiPaolo resigned effective Sept. 9, 2024, and Mayor Carlton Kirby announced his resignation effective Sept. 30, 2024. The Village Administrator posted vacancy notices and received responses from Dana Merrill, Amold Aliff and Elizabeth Abrahams, the minutes say.

By unanimous vote the council appointed Ray Nyhuis to serve as mayor until the March 2026 election. After deliberation and unanimous votes, the council appointed Dana Merrill to fill the vacancy created by DiPaolo’s resignation and Amold Aliff to fill the vacancy created when Ray Nyhuis moved to the mayor’s office; both appointments also run until the March 2026 election, according to the minutes.

Earlier in the meeting the council approved the Sept. 23, 2024 meeting minutes (motion by Council Member Jeff Grenell, seconded by Council Member Warren Nadeau; recorded as passing 3-0) and ratified electronic invoice payments made from Sept. 23, 2024 through the present day (motion by Council Member Grenell, seconded by Council Member Nadeau; recorded as passing 3-0).

The minutes record the votes as unanimous for the three appointments but do not provide a roll-call tally for each appointment; where the minutes give a numeric tally (minutes/invoices) they record 3-0. The Village Charter language in the minutes says that in the absence of the mayor the president of the village council shall act for the mayor during the interim.
