The Ely City Council on July 7 approved a series of routine motions and payments, voting unanimously on minutes, an added claims item and multiple bills.
Councilmember Debeltz moved and Roose seconded to approve the minutes from the June 16, 2026 regular meeting; the motion carried unanimously. Council then voted to add a claims-for-payment item—Partial Payment Estimate #1 for the 2026 Street & Infrastructure Improvements Project to Mesabi Bituminous, Inc. for $73,601.25—after a motion from Bisbee with Campbell seconding; that motion also passed unanimously.
Under Ely Utilities Commission recommendations, the council approved a $6,396.83 payment to RESCO for street-lighting wire and conduit for the Pattison Street project, and a $400 energy rebate to Jim Robbins at 410 E Sheridan St.; both motions carried unanimously. The City Attorney recommended approval of a Note and Mortgage for a $10,000 Residential Rehab Loan to Larry and Amy Wier at 10 W Shagawa Rd for a new propane furnace; the council approved the loan unanimously. The council also approved a Quit Claim Deed releasing the city’s reversionary interest in Lot 11, Block 2, East Spaulding, after Attorney Klun explained the original right of re-entry.
Finally, the council approved City and EUC claims for $366,560.51 and the Partial Payment Estimate #1 for the 2026 Street & Infrastructure Improvements Project to Mesabi Bituminous, Inc. for $73,601.25; the motion carried unanimously. Mayor Omerza adjourned the meeting at 6:15 p.m. without objection.
Why it matters: The approvals finalize payments and contractual progress on local infrastructure work (including the ongoing 2026 Street & Infrastructure Improvements Project) and complete a modest residential rehabilitation loan and a property-title cleanup that clear reversionary interest on a previously restricted lot.
