Board approves housing ordinance changes, records digitization, permits and other routine items

At its March 17 meeting the Oxford Board of Aldermen moved through several routine but consequential actions: it approved an amendment to Chapter 22 on affordable housing, authorized conversion of paper personnel files to an electronic system, approved a parade/fireworks permit for June 27, authorized the mayor to sign a contract for the Oxford Conference Center lighting upgrade, approved an alley closure for paving work and authorized purchase of a small parcel on Howell Loop needed for a lift-station upgrade. The board also adopted a resolution honoring Captain Donovan Lyons for 34 years of law enforcement service.
Affordable housing: Ben presented an unchanged ordinance amendment to Chapter 22 related to affordable housing; the board approved the changes on second reading after no public comment. Ben and representatives of the housing commission were available to answer questions.
Records digitization: The board approved using RJ Young to digitize personnel records beginning March 27, consistent with Mississippi Code §21-15-37.
Permits and contracts: The board approved a fireworks/parade permit for Stefano Capamaza's June 27 event and authorized the mayor to sign a $446,270 contract with Whitfield Electric for a conference-center lighting upgrade after required bonds were submitted and a signed contract received. The board also authorized advertising bids for roundabout signage and soliciting RFPs for a Walk of Lights expansion funded by the 2% tourism fund.
Real estate and closures: The board approved the purchase of a 0.07-acre parcel on Howell Loop for $50,000 needed for a lift-station upgrade and approved closing South 11th Street Alley for daytime paving work on March 23.
Honors: The board adopted a resolution of appreciation for Captain Donovan Lyons; Lyons spoke briefly and thanked colleagues, and the resolution was spread on the minutes.
