South Davis Metro proposes 16% property-tax increase; public hearing set for Aug. 3

City staff read a required notice from South Davis Metro Fire at the July 21 Centerville City Council meeting announcing a proposed 16.31% property-tax increase for the fire-service district that covers five cities.
Staff provided example figures from the district’s packet: for a median residential home in the five-city district (reported at $651,000), the district portion would shift from $182.61 to $212.32, an increase of just under $30 per year for that illustrative home.
The district estimates the measure would generate substantially more revenue overall; staff said the full packet lists that change and that the public hearing is scheduled for 6 p.m. Aug. 3, 2026, at Station 81 in Bountiful (255 South 100 West). Councilors and staff noted a typographical issue in the packet’s table that should be corrected before wider distribution.
Council members asked for clarifying figures specific to Centerville and were told the county would be the source for city-by-city impact calculations. Staff noted that the city’s own proposed property-tax increase (on a different agenda item) would cover local needs such as a proposed new police officer, and that the fire-district change would have a modest per-household effect in Centerville.
