Board hears first reading of 20% water and sewer rate increase

City utility staff presented a first reading of ordinance amendments that would raise water and sewer rates by roughly 20 percent across the board.
Rob presented the proposed changes to Chapter 114 (water rates) and Chapter 144 (sewer rates), specifying inside-city volumetric charges, outside-city charges, minimum monthly charges and flat rates for nonmetered customers. He said the inside-city water volumetric charge would change to $4.26 per 1,000 gallons over 2,000 gallons with a residential minimum of $8.52 per month; outside-city rates and nonmetered flat charges were included in the ordinance text. For sanitary sewer the proposed inside-city volumetric charge would be $5.66 per 1,000 gallons over 2,000 gallons with a minimum monthly charge of $11.32; outside-city rates and nonmetered flat fees were also set forth.
Rob said the increase reflects operational, maintenance and capital costs and noted Oxford’s current minimum water rate places it among the lowest in Mississippi; even after the increase, he said, rates would remain comparatively affordable. The item was presented as a first reading; the board set a second reading and public hearing for a future meeting.
