City staff update: Earth Month activities, Sherwin Williams and Gem City solar projects moving forward

Matthew Worsham, sustainability staff, said the city is marking Earth Month under the theme 'Earth Day-Ton' and listed upcoming community events and volunteer opportunities, including Highview Hills cleanups led by Niani Brown and the Children’s Water Festival that needs volunteers.
Worsham provided status updates on two utility-scale solar projects. He said the former Sherwin Williams site is in pre-construction planning and that digging should begin by the end of the year. The Gem City Solar Project—located in the northwest portion of the city—was approved by the Commission in February and is expected to break ground around the same time as the Sherwin Williams project. Both projects were described as year-long construction efforts once begun.
Staff also noted funding and cleanup developments relevant to sustainability work: Carco is finalizing a scope of work with the EPA; Harrison Township is securing $1,000,000 for cleanup; and the city received an EPA grant for spill kits and signage in the Source Water Protection Area. Worsham said the Climate Resiliency Fund application period closes at the end of April.
The board did not vote on the projects during the meeting; Worsham’s report was informational. The sustainability updates will be folded into future EAB discussions as project permitting and construction progress.
